In this blog post, I want to discuss the rising trend in using green marketing to grow a more profitable business.

Small businesses can be green (that is, eco friendly) in several ways. You can be green through your business practices, products, production process, tools used in your business and office building; by integrating eco friendly practices into your business activities, using reusable and recycled packaging, using eco production process if you produce or manufacture goods or products, using energy-efficient computers, vehicles and electronic appliances, and setting up renewable heating and cooling energy systems etc in the office.

You can actually use all these and more to reduce the impact of doing business on the environment and become very eco friendly or greener.

To become profitable as a small business you may usually use conventional marketing methods to achieve your targets. if you wish to use green marketing methods, however, you will need to understand what it is and how to use it effectively to achieve your desired objective.

Green marketing is the act of being green and using that fact as a marketing strategy for selling your products or services.

Before you can sell, you will need to choose a niche and end users to sell to. You will need to know your targets’ problems and the solutions to them, what they want/or need and the values your competitors are giving them. You will use these to create a competitive edge for your business and clearly define the core values you will offer your targets to make money. Defining your business core values is critical to the success of your green marketing.

Your core values are what your targets will pay for even if you are not green. For example, if you are a web host, you must provide reliable and affordable web hosting, If you sell automobiles, you must provide your end users with the specific car model, color, engine type, price etc they may want. In other words, your end users must get the fundamental thing they are looking for in your service/product in addition to the added value that you are green, if you want to make the sale.

Your first step to profiting with green marketing is to get educated. Know what being green is, join online green communities and so on. Become informed. To give an indication that your business is truly green, you need to get certified. This does not have to be complicated; it could be as simple as completing a course on some eco issues. You will need to do this so you can use the certification’s eco/green labels or logos on your product, website and/or service. You should also apply whatever you learnt into your business practices.

You will need to group your end users as green and non-green targets and promote on green advertising media in addition to the usual advertising media and also use messages (ads and content) that highlight your core values and the fact that you are green. You should do it in this manner so you can easily track how much you are making through each group of targets. If the potential prospects for your business are just green end users, then you may use only the media that will reach them.

When discussing the greenhouse effect it is important to keep in mind that things like methane emissions and carbon dioxide emissions have been around for longer than humans have. Methane and carbon dioxide are both naturally occurring gases that meet some specific needs in the natural order of the planet.

The problem is that, since the industrial revolution, we have been producing them in larger quantities than the planet can handle. Naturally, these gases then hang around in our atmosphere waiting to be processed and in the meantime they absorb heat. That is why greenhouse gases are dangerous and that is how they are contributing to the problem of global warming.

But unnatural carbon dioxide emissions, methane emissions, nitrous oxide emissions and other chemical byproducts or emissions can really put a damper on the ecosystem. It is the sheer volume of that has been created and unlike our previous thoughts on humanities affect on the environment was too small to make a difference, we are quickly being proven wrong. Greenhouse gases are out there in such great amounts that they are throwing off the balance of the environment.

It is the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and methane emissions that are causing the problem. The fact that they are here at all is not the issue. They are naturally occurring gases that help the planet survive. The problem is that we are now producing so much of them that the plants and trees can't process the carbon dioxide into oxygen as fast as we are producing it. Our actions regarding clear cutting the world's forests further exacerbates this issue.

But where does all of these carbon dioxide emissions come from?  Each time a human or animal takes a breath an exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.  Oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is exhaled.  As our world population climbs, so too does the number of animals consumed for meat and with it the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.  In a balanced ecosystem Greenhouse gases are perfectly natural but it is when populations exceed what nature can adequately sustain that problems arise.

If carbon dioxide emissions and methane emissions were the only types of gas emissions we had to think about, we'd be a lot better off. But our very civilization is based on things that produce gases we created ourselves, unnatural poisons that we're dumping into the environment. It would be silly to think that we could go back to the way things were. Greenhouse gases are here to stay, and probably in large quantities, but we can just think about it a little more clearly and maybe make a difference to the planet.

Gas emissions and the greenhouse effect used to be a conversation that was reserved for environmentalists and the politicians that they lobbied. Now, however, with the recent support of Hollywood to popularize its cause, the word about automotive pollution and other greenhouse gasses has reached the ears of the masses. It is now common place to hear discussions about global warming and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the midst of people's everyday conversations. Even political and religious groups who used to think that the talk about emissions was political hype have started to realize that this is a serious matter that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

The first question that is especially relevant today concerning gas emissions is where do they actually come from? Reducing greenhouse emissions won't be possible until we actually learn what, specifically, we are doing to case them in the first place. Take methane emissions, for instance. To put it simply, methane is produced by the breakdown of organic waste matter-such as the fermentation of feces or the rotting of flesh. It is also present in natural gas fields, from which it is mined for use in fuels. And yes, it is also produced in great quantities by the belching of cattle. But there are other greenhouse gases as well.

We cannot eliminate greenhouse gases from the planet. We actually produce them every time we exhale. We do however, need to reduce them. The key is to keep the greenhouse gas emissions at a level where the plant life on earth is able to process them and create oxygen. It is a symbiotic relationship that has been thrown off because of all the extra greenhouse gases that we create. The fact that we are cutting down rainforests faster than we can re-grow them doesn't help us maintain this balance.

But gas emissions come from such varied places, that there may be other things we can do. For instance, methane is also made by producing and transporting coal, natural gas and oil. Additional carbon dioxide is produced when wood, solid waste and fossil fuels are burned. Besides carbon dioxide and methane, there are other natural greenhouse gases filling our atmosphere: water vapor, nitrous oxide. However, there are some powerful greenhouse gases that are not naturally occurring. Those include sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and chlorofluorocarbons.

As we begin to see physical evidence of the global warming that is a result of methane gas emissions and other greenhouse gases, people are finally starting to take positive steps. Education has been the biggest problem, and the willingness of public figures to use their influence to get the word out has played a key role in this shift. Most people just don't understand how important it is to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It's not that they don't care, it's just that they have so many problems in their day to day lives already that they don't see how driving their car to the supermarket is causing anyone any harm.

Global issues affect us on a daily basis even though we may not realize the issues have great importance.

The dawning of civilization has brought humans into contact with each other. It is in our nature to interact. Sometimes these interactions were not peaceful or helpful. But regardless of the outcome of that interaction, globalization occurred each time. The world community, as it has developed greater technology, has expanded its borders incredibly. Where once it may have taken years to conduct trade or foreign affairs, it can now be done almost instantly.

The global issues and debates are many and in this brief article we look at some of the key components that make up globalization.

What are global issues?

Global issues are anything that causes interaction and exchange between different people. Some of the global issues commonly seen on the news are: war, poverty, economics and immigration. These issues affect everyone on the planet in some way. How they are handled is up to the individuals and their governments.

Global issues have come into light frequently during the decades since World War I. There are competing theories as to how countries should handle global issues. Some issues are handled by the United Nations and covered under treaties and protocols, such as the Kyoto Protocol governing greenhouse gas emissions. Other global issues are handled charity organizations such as church groups and non-profit organizations.

Why are some people for globalization?

In theory globalization would allow free trade among all nations. There would be no tariffs or taxes levied against incoming or outgoing products. This would lead to an increase in commerce and economic standings for some countries. Other theories believe that it could lead to monopolization by countries that use sweat shops and underpaid workers and can give lower prices on consumer goods.

As you can guess, the economy plays a huge part in every part of any global issue. When a natural disaster strikes, countries of wealth donate goods, services and money to the victims. Immigration laws are based around social issues such as welfare, labor and housing. Some people feel that immigrants take the available jobs that would typically go to citizens. Other people have the opinion that immigrants should be allowed to live the best life possible and be free to live in any country of their choice.

How will globalization take care of many of the issues that face humanity all over the world?

Globalization primarily effects trade and interaction. Most global issues have their roots in trade of one sort or another. If all countries participated in a Free-Market economy there could be repercussions but there would also be tremendous benefits. Tariffs and taxes can bite into a nation's income it draws through exports and imports. If countries had more money, it might mean more food, shelter and healthcare for citizens. There would be more aid in times of need and disaster without relying on other countries for economic assistance.

What organizations are in charge of the various laws?

Every country has their own set of laws where globalization and global issues are concerned. The United Nations is involved in many of the issues that are prevalent in the world. It does not always have the power or funds to enforce certain issues but it can try to bring nations to their side in the arguments. The U.N. can also bring the public spotlight on issues that private contributions can help with such as poverty or hunger.

What can I do to help further education about global issues where I live?

Most people pick one global issue and concentrate on it. If you were to try to help them all, you would find yourself spread to thin to be of any use. Try choosing an issue that you are passionate about and truly want to help. After you have chosen an issue it is time to become educated. You can only sway others if you have the facts. There is an organization for all major global issues. Chose one that you believe is more akin to your own personal beliefs and contact them for advice on how to educate your friends, family members, coworkers and fellow citizens.

No matter how many times it must be said, drinking water is an absolute must in your life. You cannot get all the fluids you need from soda pop. There is certainly a lot of discussion in this day and age about the topic of "organics" and the meaning of the term organic waste. Any kind of waste products that originated in some kind of biological form can be considered organic.

Examples of some types of organic matter that results in organic types of waste products are: paper, including newsprint and cardboard; green waste elements, which include garden and yard waste; food remnants and waste; animal faeces; and sludges and biosolids.

The process that organic matter goes through to become waste is called composting. The composting process breaks down the microorganisms in the organic material through a combination of exposure to heat, moisture, oxygen and bacteria. Once this organic material has passed through this decomposing process, it can be reused as a very effective soil additive.

The fact of the matter is that even though most people don't think about it in these terms, organic waste is an essential and life-giving part of the cycle of life on earth. There is no doubt that the natural decomposition and composting process is simply nature's way of recycling.

Once organic materials are gathered together in a compost pile, the microorganisms rapidly increase in number and essentially grow into a community that "colonizes" the composter. Through the natural biological functions of the microorganisms, the organic components are systematically broken down and the result is a nutrient rich compost.

As the bacterial microorganisms grow, they assimilate the starches, sugars and organic acids found in the waste matter. A side effect of their activity is a rise in the temperature in the center-most portion of the compost heap. Eventually, the temperature of the core of the compost pile will reach more than 140 degrees Fahrenheit and this heat contributes to the escalating decomposition of the material.

When the busy bacteria have consumed all of the sugars and starches and other materials they feast upon, the interior temperature of the compost heap begins to fall. As the temperatures become lower, other kinds of microorganisms, such as fungi, become more dominant in the composting community. At this stage the waste is considered to be stabilizing but there are still biological activities going on which will affect the woody elements of the compost mixture, allowing them to be broken down as well.

In order to continue through the composting process, the compost heap needs to be turned. This is a simple process that brings the material that is on the edges of the heap into the center so that it can be exposed to this process of heating as described above. It is recommended to allow the compost pile to sit undisturbed for approximately two weeks between turnings.

Organic waste can continue to be added to the composting pile. As time goes by and the compost heap is properly turned, all the organic components will have the opportunity to break down. After approximately six months of managing the compost pile, the resulting compost can be used as a very effective soil additive and fertilizer that will help produce a healthy and thriving vegetable garden, or for larger organic farming endeavors.

In areas where landfills are starting to reach capacity, many councils and municipalities are encouraging their citizens to separate their yard debris from the rest of the garbage so it can be recycled. The yard waste is then used for composting and the compost that eventually results is used to improve the soil in various public facilities, such as parks. Some local governments even allow a certain amount of the compost to be used by homeowners for their lawns or organic farming endeavors.

This use of yard waste on a municipal level has helped to reduce the burden on the landfills, while making people more aware of the importance of organic waste recycling and of the benefits of composting. At the same time, the parks and recreational departments are able to cut their budgets for fertilizer and soil treatments by utilizing the compost to treat and improve the soil in the parks. Some cities also use the compost to support the community vegetable garden projects as well.

The most commonly used raw materials that are used for these composting projects are the abundant yard waste materials such as fallen leaves, grass clippings, hedge and shrub trimmings, and small-size, pruned tree branches. Larger branches and trees can also be run through a chipper and the mulch can be added to the compost, as well as the many Christmas trees that are chipped and shredded each year.

Of course, individual households can easily compost their yard debris as well, without needing to either wait for the pick-up schedule or for their municipality to institute such a program. Backyard composting is quite simple to start and there are compost bins available on the market for those with small or large backyards. Even those who live in apartments can enjoy the benefits of recycling their organic kitchen waste.

In fact, home composting can be a better solution. This is because most municipalities exclude certain organic waste products from the public composting piles that can readily be added to your composting project. For instance, at home you can include newspaper, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, fruit rinds and vegetable peels. Most of the time you cannot include any of these items with your yard waste for curbside pickup.

With backyard composting, you can include all of these items right alongside of your yard waste and debris and throw it all right on your compost heap. However, you should never include animal meat, bones, pet feces, or any dairy products. These waste items will simply attract vermin and pests to your backyard and interfere with the decomposition process.

It has been estimated that by separating yard waste from other garbage and turning that organic material into compost, municipalities are able to reduce the amount of trash that is sent to their landfills by up to 20%, depending on the season. This can help to make a significant difference for the future and at the very least buy some time while the decision makers figure out how to deal with the landfill issues. At the very least, every homeowner can do their part by either composting their green waste themselves or separating it and putting it out for council or municipal pickup.

Building up sustainable soil for organic gardening starts right after the garden soil testing has been completed. The testing of the soil helps to identify the additional fertilizers and conditioners that can be added. In addition to compost, it is good to have enzymes, earthworms, and beneficial microbes available to add into the soil mixture as well.

If a quality organic garden plot has been established, then it should be properly maintained for ongoing organic gardening by adding a healthy amount of compost to the soil regularly. The easiest way to do this is to remove some of the garden topsoil at the end of a growing season, add a layer of compost on top, and then mix it into the dirt.

Backyard composting is a terrific way to improve your soil structure and also enhance moisture retention. In the average compost heap there are billions of bacterial organisms that will grow, feed, reproduce and die. Through this life-cycle of the microorganisms, the organic waste material that has been added to the compost pile will be recycled into a robust organic fertilizer and effective soil conditioner.

Many people say that composting is truly the ultimate in recycling because it benefits the soil in so many ways and supports organic farming and gardening in its highest and best sense. In addition to improving the structure of the soil and the moisture retention ability of the soil, composting also provides excellent aeration, full fertilization and nitrogen storage. Composting also creates a beneficial pH balance in the soil, releases a stream of nutrients and supplies food for the beneficial microbial inhabitants in the earth.

Shredded alfalfa hay is one of the best types of material that you can add to your compost heap, and some say it is "the" secret to a great compost recipe. Worms really thrive on alfalfa, making worm composting even more effective and faster, and it provides excellent mulch and soil additive components for your soil.

When you are preparing the compost heap to be used in your organic gardening project, it is best to build up the compost pile until it is about four feet in diameter and also approximately four feet height. It should be situated on a spot with good drainage and the pile should be enclosed with chicken wire so that it has good air circulation, but is still contained. After a period of three to four months it will be ready to mix in with your soil.
